Service-Learning Australia

Phase 5: Identify Service Goals and Learning Goals .

Student Direction is one of the Standards of Good Quality Service-Learning.  Students work with the community they wish to serve to identify clear service goals that can be evaluated and they then work with you, their teacher, to identify the learning goals.  These are not just curriculum outcomes, but other learning goals as well:

  • Learning to be a learner (critical thinking, problem solving, communication skills)
  • Learning about community (people, issues, resources, policies).
  • Inter and intra-personal learning (working with others, learning about other cultures)
  • Exploring personal values, ethics (appreciating different values; developing self-efficacy and empathy)
  • Career learning
  • Civic learning
